Food & Drink

The links between Food in Schools, cooking, growing, food procurrement, social justice, ethical trading, visits to farms and healthy schools initiatives are expanding all the time. It is becoming almost impossible to keep an overview on what is taking place but some of the key developments are:

Regional Groupings

Regional School Food, Health and Wellbeing Network. This group made up of representatives from the School Food Trust, GONE, Local Authorities and other key agencies is providing an overview on initatiatives and is keen to ensure that initiatives are coherent.

NEW Growing Schools Regional Partnership

NESPSS was given the opportunity to bid to Growing Schools nationally to develop a pilot for the country to support the development of Growing Schools support in the north east region. A group of organisations involved historically in Growing Schools activity met to agree the action plan and future direction. Notes from the meeting are available. Activities will take place between September 09 and March 2010.

Initiatives

Whats Cooking? (formerly Cook-it!)

Whats Cooking looks to use innovative and challenging ways in which to engage young people, their families and the wider community in the whole concept of food sourcing, preparation and healthy eating. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) commissioned Continyou to work with every local authority in the North East of England to roll out with 100 clubs across the region. The project will run from 1 September 2006 to 31 August 2007, and is aimed at young people age 11-14 who will work towards developing their core food competencies.

Food for Life Partnership

Funded by the Big Lottery Fund, the north east region is one of the first to begin work on this five year programme. Twenty schools will be supported to develop projects around the issues of food procurement, growing, cooking etc. These initiatives will be linked back into the Regional School Food Network to ensure good dissemination of information across the region.
