Growing and Cooking Food

The links between Food in Schools, cooking, growing, food procurrement, social justice, ethical trading, visits to farms and healthy schools initiatives are expanding all the time. It is becoming almost impossible to keep an overview on what is taking place but some of the key developments are:

Regional Groupings

Regional School Food Network. This group made up of representatives from the School Food Trust, GONE, Local Authorities and other key agencies is providing an overview on initatiatives and is keen to ensure that initiatives are coherent.

Initiatives

Whats Cooking? (formerly Cook-it!)

Whats Cooking looks to use innovative and challenging ways in which to engage young people, their families and the wider community in the whole concept of food sourcing, preparation and healthy eating. The Food Standards Agency (FSA) commissioned Continyou to work with every local authority in the North East of England to roll out with 100 clubs across the region. The project will run from 1 September 2006 to 31 August 2007, and is aimed at young people age 11-14 who will work towards developing their core food competencies.

North East Centre of Excellence - Public Procurrement of Food

This work is being led by Bill Kirkup based at Gateshead Council. Huge amounts of work are being produced. Bill has produced some excellent seasonality charts.

Durham Growing and Cooking Initiative

This initiative is in its very early stages and is focussing on County Durham in the first instance. A group of interested parties got together at The EWE Centre on 7th July 06 to share current practice and discuss ideas for future projects.

There was a will to develop a pilot project focussing on a small number of schools in the east and west of the county. Please return as plans develop.

If you would like to be involved e-mail us your details.
