The document highlights the practical action the Department and other government departments will take to ensure that schools have all the support they need to become models of sustainable development for young people and their communities by 2020. It recognises that action needs to be coordinated action at national, local and school level in order to embed sustainable development in the school system. And at all of these levels, emphasis is placed for schools that this is not an additional requirement or burden – it’s simply a way of integrating existing policies and good practice to deliver an exciting and engaging curriculum to pupils. Click here to find out more and here for the booking form. 13th December 2006 Eric Prydz the dance music producer has created a new tune based on the old Pink Floyd tune 'Another Brick in the Wall', an interesting video with an environmental message. I think it would be an interesting way to start a discussion on energy and transport for that matter with a secondary school group. 13th December 2006 Newcastle University through their Institute for Research on Environment and Sustainability are working with partners to develop a bid to the United Nations Institute for Advanced Studies for the north east to become a Regional Centre of Expertise for ESD. As more develops I'll keep you updated. 12th December 2006 The National Teaching Awards have now included a special award for schools to highlight their work on being a Sustainable School. Click for more information and to nominate a school. 5th December 2006 The Government’s response to the Sustainable Schools Consultation was released on 4 December by Education Minister Parmjit Dhanda. The consultation, held from May to September 2006, received over 900 responses, including 347 from young people. The release of the response document comes ahead of a formal action plan with specific measures and targets to support local authorities and schools create fully sustainable schools, to be launched early in 2007. Both activities are part of a Year of Action on sustainable schools, which started in September 2006. The aim of the year is to enable schools to embed sustainability in all aspects of their operations.
