Latest News 15th January 2009 Happy New Year to you all. Its going to be a busy year for Sustainable Schools activity. We will do our best to keep the site updated with the activity that is taking place across the region. Linked to the Corporate Approaches work Durham held at event for schools which was attended by over 40 staff from 30 schools. Redcar and Cleveland are holding their event today at Bydales School. For information Gateshead is organising a Sustainable Schools Conference on 26th January. 19th December 2008 Apologies for the poor updating of the NESPSS site in the last couple of months, I don't know where this term has gone. Here are a few key points for you to note: + All the information from the Sustainable School - Global School Conference is available to download from the One World Network North East site. + The three successful north east local authorities who are taking part in the Corporate Approach to Sustainable Schools pathfinder project funded by DCSF are; Newcastle, Durham and Redcar & Cleveland. Events are being planned by them in early 2009. + Digital Vision and Groundwork Uk have won a DCSF tender to highlight ways to mainstream Sustainable Schools activity, events are planned in Spring 2009 which will be posted on this site. + DCSF have been developing more resources linked to Sustainable Schools, visit the Teachernet site to download or order your copies. 22nd October 2008 The Teaching Awards are requesting nominations for the 2009 awards. One of the awards is the DCSF Sustainable Schools Award, there are regional heats held and then a national televised final. For more information and to nominate a school before the 1st March 09 click on the above link. 22nd October 2008 Notes from the Eco-Schools Partnership meeting on 9th October are now available to download from the Eco-Schools page 17th October 2008 DCSF have released a tender and are now seeking organisations or consortia to work with them to mainstream sustainable schools and will be looking to this organisation or consortia to provide national coverage (England). For more information visit the DCSF procurement site 16th October 2008 Teesside One World Centre are organising a conference called Sustainable Schools The Global Dimension, Climate Change and Development on 4/12/08. For more information visit the events page 10th October 2008 Ofsted and DCSF have launched a consultation on indicators to measure how schools contribute to well-being. 7th October 2008 NEPIC and BOC have launched their regional environmental awards for Primary and Secondary schools. Winning schools will receive a cash prize of £2000. To find out more and download the application forms click on the appropriate links above. 3rd October 2008 A busy day yesterday, Ofsted released their thematic survery into Learning Outside the Classroom, its available to download from the Ofsted website. DCSF launched the new Learning Outside the Classroom materials at a conference in Greenwich. It includes the new Out and About packages and information about the quality badges for providers. The information is available from their new website www.lotc.org.uk 2nd October 2008 NESPSS, One World Network North East and ATLAS are organising a conference called Sustainable School - Global School? on Wed 12th November at The Castlegate, Newcastle. For more information download the conference flyer and booking form. 1st October 2008 October is Walk to School month. This years theme is Power Up! and they're focusing on getting children to power up with energy by walking to school. A brisk walk to school is an easy way to boost energy levels for the day ahead and improve overall health. For more information visit the website. 19th September 2008 The notes from the NESPSS AGM and Networking event held at Blackfriars on 3rd September 2008 are available to download from here. 15th September 2008 News of a new One World Network North East course: Thinking of Linking? Thursday, 23rd October, Angel View Inn, Gateshead. One World Network North East are running a one-day course called Thinking of Linking? for teachers from schools that are considering a partnership with a school in Africa, Asia, Latin America or the Caribbean. The course will cover many elements of linking including expectations of a link, how to find a partner, how to communicate and how to get the most out of your link. For more info see OWNNE's website 26th August 2008 The AGM for NEEN/NESPSS is taking place on 3rd September 2008 at Blackfriarsd Meeting Rooms, Newcastle from 4-7pm. Following the short AGM a networking session will take place where representatives can hear from about previous sustainability projects in the region, the launch of a new opportunity for local authorities and have an opportunity to inpout into the future strategy of NESPSS. For more information download the programme and booking from. 4th August 2008 Staffordshire University are organising a conference on the links between the environment, well-being and a healthy lifestyle on 19th November 2008 in Stoke. For more information download the programme and the booking form. 4th August 2008 The Soil Association are currently advertising for a Northern Farm Links Officer. The Part-time role (3 days) involves administration of the farm links programme in 3 Northern regions and delivery of 'One Planet Food' workshops in schools. The closing date for applications is Friday 15th Aug. 4th August 2008 'Putting the Global back into Sustainable Schools' is a course for KS1 -4 PSHCE teachers on 25th September at Cliffe Castle in Keighley (West Yorkshire) run by Craven Development Education Centre. This will be the fourth time this course has been run and has proved extremely popular. for more information download the course flyer. 21st July 2008 The mapping document produced to help schools identify how whole school award schemes link together and overlap is available to download from the Teachernet Sustainable Schools site. 21st July 2008 Interesting news on how schools will be included in the carbon trading scheme for local authorities on the DEFRA website. Also a new report from the Sustainable Development Commission on Carbon Emissions from Schools is also available. 2nd July 2008 The Year of Food and Farming are asking teachers that have taken part in the 'Year' to complete a quick and simple survey by 1st August 2008. This will only take you a couple of minutes to complete but will provide an invaluable source of information to help to continue to provide these types of activities in the future.
