Latest News 30th July 09 You may have read the new White Paper from DCSF 'building on a 21st Century schools system'. Its an interesting read. If not I've extracted some of the statements which in my view relate to Sustainable Schools. 29th July 09 Zac Goldsmith has written an article for The Guardian highlighting activities schools should be engaging with. The comments from readers at the end are quite interesting. His suggestions are nothing groundbreaking and rather London centric but worth a read non the less. 24th July 09 DCSF has launched a consultation process with schools and those involved in education on a carbon management strategy for schools. More information is available from the Teachernet site. 23rd July 09 The Council for the Protection of Rural England (CPRE) is running a campaign called Stop the Drop. As part of the campaign they have commissioned a schools education pack is free to download and includes a range of information, activities and a story. It's worth downloading if you are planning on investigating or trying to combat litter in your school/ local community. 17th July 09 A conference promoting health and wellbeing and its impact on education is running at the NEC in Birmingham on 10th & 11th November. For more info visit www.healthwellbeingeducation.co.uk 16th July 09 Recommendations from a report by NEWER into waste issues for schools and the voluntary and community sector have been added to the document library. The report which focussed on Newcastle schools highlights generic issues which are appropriate across the region. 15th July 2009 Two mainstreaming Sustainable Schools reports have been added to the document library. One is a national summary of the findings from the work undertaken on behalf of DCSF by Groundwork and Digital Public, the other is the specific north east region report. 14th July 2009 Durham County Council has been successful in appointing a Regional John Muir Award Manager. The post has been made possible with funding from Natural England as part of the Big Lottery funds Changing Spaces programme. The post in partnership with the John Muir Trust will be a new post for the region promoting the value of the John Muir Award and encouraging more schools and young people's groups to deliver it. The new Manager will be in post for October this year based at The EWE Centre but spending lots of time out in the region. 14th July 2009 IPPR North is coordinating an event: Learning by Doing: How best can museums inspire and engage young people? Closing date is 18th August. 10th July 2009 Congratulations to all the schools who took part in the Solar Car Challenge yesterday hosted by Nissan. Twenty nine schools took part on the day and brought along a fantastic variety of designs for both the speed and design parts of the challenge. It was amazingly a dry day and the sun even emerged for the speed finals in the afternoon. 25th June 2009 Please see the flyer promoting a CPD course on 14th October for special school staff supporting sustainability and diversity from the Tees Valley One World Centre. 23rd June 2009 The newly revamped national DCSF Sustainable Schools website has gone live to find out more visit www.teachernet.gov.uk/sustainableschools 4th June 2009 WWF-UK have published 'Learning for Sustainability: from the pupils perspective'. This report is a result of a three-year longitudinal study of 15 schools, written by Chris Gayford looking at the impact that a whole school approach to sustainability can have on pupil attainment and motivation. It can be downloaded at www.wwf.org.uk/oneplanetschools 3rd June 2009 National Sustainable Schools Conference 2009 The conference is this year brought to you by WWF-UK, DCSF and Sustainability and Environmental Education (SEEd). This year, to reduce travel and allow more teachers to attend, the National Sustainable Schools Conference will be hosted in four locations around the country.

conference: Schools have a vital role to play in ensuring that the next
generation have the skills and knowledge to make sustainable lifestyle
choices. New resources and support are being created around the National
Sustainable Schools Framework initiative from DCSF and many schools are
aware of the government target of all schools being sustainable schools
by 2020. The National Sustainable Schools Conference will help you plan
your journey to becoming a sustainable school. There will be participatory
workshops for you to identify tasks, resources and approaches. There will
be a market place with many of the local and national organisations who
offer support and resources to schools with demonstrations of their work.
You will get to meet schools from your region who have begun their sustainable
schools work. If you would
