Defra is looking for new young people to be Climate Change Champions. For more information click here. This programme will be supported by Dr Krista McKinzey who is the new Climate Change Schools Officer for the region based at the NE Science Learning Centre in Durham.

EDUCATION - THE FUTURE OF FOREST SCHOOLS. Archimedes Training and Merrivale Nurseries are hosting a one-day forum to discuss the future of Forest Schools. The meeting is at Bestwood Country Park, Nottinghamshire on 19 October; www.forest2007.com.

Dott 07 is hosting a debate entitled Sustainability, Schools and Schooling as part of their Festival on the Gateshead quayside which suggests that one group above all others has a stake in the transition to sustainability: today's school students. Are we giving them enough leeway to shape the world they will live in? The debate takes place on Tuesday 23 October at The Baltic Centre for Contemporary Art, Gateshead. The Sustainable Development Commission have today released the report Every Child's Future Matters. It explores the influence the environment has on children’s well-being. It is written for everyone designing and delivering services that impact on children’s lives. Using a mix of commissioned research and the experience of nine local authorities, it demonstrates how attention to the environment provides a powerful mode of delivering ECM outcomes. The Northern Sustainable Schools Conferencewill take place on 7th and 8th February at the Park Inn Hotel in York. This event is being jointly organised by the North west, Yorkshire & Humber and North East regions. A detailed programme will be available shortly.

Durham County Council will be hosting one of the four national Sustainable Schools Seminars in Durham City during November 07. These seminars are aimed at local authority staff to develop strategies to deliver a corporate cross-service appraoch to supporting schools on this issue. The seminar will be supported by NESPSS. More information will follow shortly.

The University of York is recruiting people for the October 2007 cohort of the part time MA in Education with an ESD Focus. This links into the the DfES Sustainble Schools initiative. They are looking to recruit both teachers and other practitioners with an interest in and commitment to education for sustainability. Click here to download the flyer.

The new Carbon Detectives website has launched. Aimed at KS 2 & 3 pupils it helps schools to look at six of the Sustainable Schools doorways and provides a carbon calculator to produce a footprint for the school. Click here to find out more and register.
